The inspiration for the Lunartable comes from the Apollo Lunar Spider, a remarkable feat of human engineering that served as a means of transportation between Earth and the Moon. While the Lunar Spider lacks organic forms, it is a creation of organic beings like humans. Draganov sought to capture the essence of this symbol of innovation and technology in his design.
One of the standout features of the Lunartable is its esthetically pleasing and futuristic shape. The organic form of the table emphasizes the flowing shape of the frame, creating a visually captivating piece. Despite its delicate appearance, the Lunartable is designed to withstand high pressure, making it both functional and durable.
The realization of the Lunartable involves advanced manufacturing techniques. The table can be produced using the sand casting method, with the sand mold created through 3D printing. The frame can be made from various materials such as aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, platinum, gold, or glass. Another method involves using a CNC 5-axis robot to produce the frame from a single piece of wood. Additionally, carbon or glass fiber materials can be used, and the table can even be completely 3D printed using plastic.
Measuring at 1075x1015x560mm, the Lunartable is designed to function as a coffee table. Its tough construction allows for both indoor and outdoor use, making it a versatile piece of furniture. The table features three horizontal surfaces on different levels, providing ample space to place and display items.
The Lunartable project began in June 2009 in Darmstadt, Germany, with the first prototype completed in September of the same year. The prototype was showcased at a student design exhibition in October 2009. In July 2012, a second prototype was developed, featuring a completely revised frame with an organic form.
Designing the Lunartable presented several challenges for Draganov. The biggest challenge was transforming a messy structure into a functional piece of furniture. Additionally, building the digital model in a 1:1 scale proved to be a significant technical hurdle.
The Lunartable has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2014, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
The Lunartable is a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology. With its organic form and futuristic appeal, it serves as a striking centerpiece in any living space, embodying the spirit of human ingenuity.
